Power Source Strength & Conditioning Coach Internship Program

NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SUMMER 2012!

If you look through our information and feel that working in our program would benefit your career, please follow the instructions at the bottom of the page to apply for a paid or unpaid internship position with Power Source.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN AS AN INTERN

Other than working on college campuses, it is difficult to find real-world strength & conditioning experience.  At Power Source, we offer you the opportunity to learn cutting-edge training techniques in a real-world setting.

In our internship program you can expect to see the latest training concepts for developing speed, agility, quickness, power, strength, building muscle, and improving athleticism.  We pride ourselves on using only the exercises and techniques that deliver genuine results for athletes.  In short, we will not be showing you the newest angle on bicep curls, or how to add 10 pounds to a bench press.  We will teach you how to train athletes to become better athletes, plain and simple.

More importantly, you will also get invaluable experience in learning to communicate as a coach.  This skill is not easy for anyone initially, and it takes years to truly find your voice.   Internships are a perfect way to get past the classroom environment, and begin to develop your ability to teach others the information you have spent so much time gathering.  The teaching and coaching professions demand extensive hands-on experience before truly becoming a great leader.

“I chose to work with Power Source because this is exactly what I would like to do when I finish with my education.  The experience that I had was more than what I expected. The learning curve is high and thinking on your feet is a must. My experience gave me the opportunity to help individual athletes in their workouts; and showing them correct technique in agilities, strength, and running portions. The group of athletes in Power Source was willing to learn and grow each day in their technique and overall intelligence in their sports.

This summer was an amazing experience, I never worked with a group of athletes that were so willing to learn day in and day out. The working environment with Jim Herrick and the other coaches was friendly and inviting where we learned off of each other.  You will never feel like you are by yourself.

A benefit for me that I took away from the program was that I was not fully comfortable working with a big group of athletes. After coaching big and small groups throughout the summer I became comfortable with how to coach a big group. With larger groups you have to engage everyone while still keeping the group and goals in mind.

I would definitely recommend this program to coaches that are starting out, because you are going to be applying the knowledge that you learned in college. As an Intern you will be coaching all different types of sports and athletes with varied personalities. Also, interns can learn how to use correct methods on designing a program for athletes.”

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM DETAILS & YOUR ROLE

Here are a few things you should know about this coaching opportunity:

  • This is a stipend position, paying $1,200 for the 12-week program
  • You will be working with a wide range of athletes. The ages run from 8-21, and they collectively play a dozen different sports. This will expose you to a ton of different training needs
  • We are tentatively scheduled to start on Monday, June 7th, and run through Friday, August 27th, although this may get moved up one week,
  • For candidates outside our immediate area of Central Massachusetts, you should know that housing IS NOT provided. We will attempt to help you find housing if you are having trouble securing a 3-month lease, but this will be your responsibility.
  • First and foremost, we are looking for people who can become a positive role-model for our young athletes. Classroom and sport-related knowledge is nice, but I and our past interns have set a precedent where our kids now look forward to working with friendly and motivational coaches.

"I learned an incredible amount about the field through interning with your program, but most of all you showed me so many different ways to open up to all sorts of kids. Relationships are the most important part of being any type of coach, and you connected to every child and parent that walked through the door."

- Emily G., former intern

Here are some of the highlights of your role and responsibilities with Power Source:

  • You will be given a weekly goal sheet outlining your learning focus for those days. Some are based on improving your interactions with the athletes, and some are geared towards learning specific training techniques
  • You can expect to get a combination of hands-on coaching opportunities, and some time to simply observe how things are done.
  • During our strength training hours, you will rotate between coaching the younger group (Age 8-10) in a small-group format, assisting the older athletes with their workouts, and observing the coaching cues and style of our head coach
  • During the speed training hours, you will alternate between observing and assisting the head coach at his station, or you will be running your own in a small group.
  • Other than the first 2 weeks, the program runs from 7 AM - Noon, Monday through Friday. This means you will not have any coaching responsibilities in the afternoons/evenings for most of the summer if you want to find another part-time job. (The possibility does exist that I may be able to offer you some occasional speed camp hours, but that is not a guarantee and you would not be required to attend.)

“I chose to work with Power Source because coaching is definitely something that I want to get into in the future. My experience was definitely a learning one. Not only did I learn proper lifting technique, speed and agility drills, and games. I’ve also learned that building a relationship with the athletes is important as well.

I would recommend this because in the 10 week period you can easily see the progression in speed and strength in all of the athletes.”

Keon Valcourt, former intern

Our Former Interns

Although we are in the infancy of taking interns onto our staff, we have had great experiences with our first four students.  They have all been positive influences in the lives of the kids they trained, and their desire to learn helped them to grow immensely as coaches in a realtively short period of time. Most importantly, all 4 of our past coaches found employment either immediately upon completion of our program, or right after they graduated from college.
